| 1. I have an outdated Rand McNally map, atlas, or book. Where can I find an updated version? |
 |

If you would like to replace an older edition of a Rand McNally map or atlas, check in our online store. If you don't see what you are looking for or have questions, please contact our store or call our customer service representatives at 800-275-RAND (-7263), Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Central Time. The following products are, however, out-of-print and unavailable:
- Rand McNally StreetFinder® and TripMaker® software
- Rand McNally Handy Railroad Atlas
- Rand McNally Banker's Directory and all banking information
- Rand McNally RV Park and Campground Directory
- Route 66 Commemorative maps (However, Rand McNally does carry publications about Route 66 in our online store.)
| 2. I have an old Rand McNally publication. Can you tell me how much it's worth? Would you like to buy it? |
 |

Rand McNally does not have appraisal information, but a used book dealer or antiquarian map dealer may be able to place a value on your map and may be interested in purchasing your item. We donated all of our rare and antique maps to a research library several years ago; we have no plans to re-establish a collection.
| 3. How do I check on my AS/400 On-Demand if the MileMaker subsystem I am running is Guide 18 or Guide 19? |
 |

From a command line on the AS/400, type the command WRKACTJOB. This will list running jobs and tasks that are currently running on the system. Using your page up or down to locate the Subsytem/Job named MMAKERSBSD. Once this is located, arrow key to the far Left cursor field on the same line as MMAKERSBSD. Type option 5 in this field, and hit Enter. This will bring you to a "Work with Job" menu list where you should select number 10 from the list. Once this is done, it will show the job log text which indicates when the MMAKERSBSD started, and from which library it launched. If it reads: "...subsystem MMAKERSBSD in GDE19OND." Then the process was launched from the Guide 18 library, utilizing Guide 19 data files.
| 4. When I perform the Guide 19 update to my AS/400 On-Demand product, what will happen to all of my user conversion (custom names) file? |
 |

The LODRUN program that runs and upgrades MileMaker from Guide 18 to Guide 19 will covert all custom points to be usable for Guide 19 calculations. All user settings will be also saved and brought over to the newer version. If there are any issues with the upgrade the installer will give you an error notification.
| 5. What will happen to my Avoid and Preferred Segments that I configured in Guide 18 when I upgrade to Guide 19? |
 |

During the restore and install of Guide 19, the setup program will read and process all avoided and preferred records from your previous installation. Because of changes in the highway network from Guide 18 to Guide 19, not all records may be able to be converted. A message will appear on your screen notifying you if this is an issue, and will allow you to view those unconverted segments.
| 6. How much more space will be necessary while upgrading to Guide 18? |
 |

If you choose to retain/backup Guide 18 during installation, you will need an additional 200 Megabytes of DASD on your system. This new install will be placed into GDE19OND, and the previous library will stay GDE18OND.
| 7. How do I know if the router subsystem is running on my AS/400? |
 |

From a command line, issue the command WRKACTJOB and look for a job named MMAKERSBS with a child job of MMROUTER. If you do not see this job, call program CLMI000 to run the subsystem start up menu.
| 8. What types of changes should I expect from Guide 19? |
 |

The major portion of the upgrade is a comprehensive highway data update. This essentially is a complete review of all the truck usable road network which MileMaker calculates routes. Updates to road restrictions, interstate systems, and other routes which commercial travel is allowed. The effect of such changes may shorten or lengthen certain routes in some areas of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. New geographic points (such as additional cities or locations) have also been included in the update.
| 9. Will there be any changes to interface programs MI110N and MI335N? |
 |

We have retained all interface programs commonly used in Guide 18 to be supported in Guide 19. Any parameters passed to such programs will also be the same as they were before Guide 19. It is important to remember to add the GDE19OND to your library list or Job Description in order to call the newer editions of these interfaces. If you have questions regarding how these interface routines operate, please contact Technical Support.
| 10. When I run a mileage, I get a mileage of 0 and a status of "E" in the MileMaker Inquiry screens |
 |

Normally, this message appears when the system is out of transactions or when it had reached the end of its billing cycle (expired). From the MileMaker main menu (program MI001) select the Billing/Transaction Update choice and choose Transaction Usage Report. If you are out of transactions, please contact 1-800-234-4069 and select "Billing."
| 11. Can I add additional cities to the system? |
 |

No. This version of MileMaker does not allow geocoding of custom points to the system.
| 12. If I have a batch file with several point pairs and I need the mileages back, how can I process them? |
 |

There is an API program routine for both HHG mileages as well as Practical Routes. For mileage request, your third party application will need to call MI110I and pass the appropriate data structure with your origin and destination cities. Practical routes will require you to call MI335I. For complete details, please refer to your On-Demand AS/400 Technical Guide. Both RPG and COBOL record layouts are available.
| 13. Will this work with Innovative Computing Corporation (ICC) enterprise software? |
 |

Yes. ICC has developed a module that will call our interface for tariff miles and payroll operations.
| 14. How big is the AS/400 installation? |
 |

The whole database and mileage engine has a small footprint. We recommend approximately 460 Megabytes of DASD. Data queues and temporary files may increase this requirement depending on use.
| 15. Does your AS/400 have a TCP/IP interface to a network? |
 |

We suggest if you have a LAN/WAN which requires mileage information that you purchase a MileMaker SP32 or IntelliRoute Deluxe suite that offers DLL, ActiveX and Java.
| 16. I am receiving awkward routing and directions when I run a practical route. |
 |

If the route seems inappropriate, contact our Technical Support department at 1-800-234-4069 and we will have our database department verify the answer.
| 17. What is the difference between the "Default Setup" and "Advances/Custom Setup" when I load the AS/400 On-Demand? |
 |

The custom setup enables slower systems to allocate a 15 Meg memory pool for the router subsystem. This will ensure that the MileMaker system will always have available memory when launching and ongoing throughout operation. Most RISC-based systems do not require this custom setup - thus the majority should accept the Default setup.

| 31. How do I read your online maps? |
 |

All of our maps have north at the top, west to the left, east to the right, and south at the bottom. The arrows or letters in the map's frame are clickable and will move the map coverage in these directions. Each map also has a clickable barscale on the left. The units are in miles.
| 32. I entered an address, but the result was different from what I expected. Why? |
 |

There are several possible reasons. Our software does its best to recognize what you've typed and match it against a large database of addresses. For best results, try these tips:
Address field: We can only route to or map street addresses with street numbers and street names or the intersection of two streets. We are not able to recognize post office boxes, apartment numbers or vanity names for buildings. We also cannot recognize geographic features, names of housing developments, or names of businesses.
The street name you've entered may be spelled differently than the actual street. In this case, our system tries to find a close match to the street or city name that you've entered and returns that map. If no street match can be made, a map will be generated of the zip code area (if entered) or the city instead.
City and state fields: Although our system will try to find a close match for misspelled city names, for best results, use the exact spellings of all names. Make sure to double-check your spelling. If you're unsure of the state's abbreviation, click "state" for a full list of U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
| 33. How often is road construction information updated? |
 |

Every two weeks. So it's a good idea to check road construction right before you head off on your road trip.
| 34. Do you plan to offer maps and driving directions for countries outside of the U.S. and Canada? |
 |

We currently provide mapping and driving directions for the U.S. and Canada. Our Online Store offers an extensive selection of maps, atlases, and globes covering world destinations.
| 35. How do I zoom in and out? How do I recenter your maps? |
 |

There are two ways to zoom in. Along the left-hand side of the map there's a zoom scale with numbers from 1 to 10. Just click on any of the numbers to zoom in and out. Zooming all the way out (1 on the zoom scale), provides you with the state and/or regional view of an address. Zooming all the way in (10 on the zoom scale) allows you to see the specific street and cross street for an address. The numbers you see indicate the scale level of coverage that each zoom level will produce.
You can also click directly on the map to zoom in or recenter. Under the map are buttons that let you choose which action you want to perform. To recenter only, choose the Recenter button and click directly on the map at the spot you would like to be the new center. Or to both recenter and zoom in with one step, click on the Zoom In & Recenter button and then click on the spot to be the new center of the map.

| 36. How do you choose routes for driving directions? |
 |

Our driving directions try to find the fastest route between two points. This means we try to use roadways with the highest speed limits. We try to route you to interstate highways or U.S. highways as quickly as possible, then keep you on these highways as long as possible.
| 37. How can I report addresses that don't work or are located incorrectly on the map? |
 |

Please let us know about any errors or omissions you find in our maps or directions, especially the names of towns and streets that we may have been unable to locate for you. Be sure to let us know the exact address or addresses you were trying to locate and if there is a problem in the directions, please let us know at exactly what step you feel an error occurred. The street or subdivision you are looking for may be new and not yet in our database. Please be patient, as adding new streets can take a long time. We will be sure to let our data suppliers know of these errors so that they can review them and add them to their update cycles.
| 38. What information do I need to enter to get a map or directions? |
 |

At a minimum we need a city and state/province or ZIP code. The following entries usually succeed in finding your location on a map:
ZIP code
City, state
City, state, ZIP code
Address, city, state
Intersection, city, state
Address, city, state, ZIP code
Intersection, city, state, ZIP code
Please note, if you have entered a city and a ZIP code, we show you the center of that ZIP code's area on the map. A ZIP code in a rural location may cover a large area and won't be centered on a city. If you don't get the map that you expected, enter the city and state, but leave out the ZIP code.
If you enter any of the above combinations and we are still unable to find your location, it's probably not in our database. Please let us know about any errors or omissions you find in our maps or directions, especially the names of towns and streets we may have been unable to locate for you. We will be sure to let our data suppliers know so they can review them for inclusion in their next update cycle.
| 39. How do I enter intersections? |
 |

Intersections should be entered as simply as possible, like "Main at Elm" or "Main and Elm." Using a slash (/) or dash (-) between the street names will not work ( e.g., "Main/Elm" or "Main-Elm"). Generally, a road name will work better than a route number.
| 40. What do the abbreviations on the maps and in my directions mean? |
 |

Some common abbreviations that you'll find on our maps and in our directions include:
Hwy » Highway
Fwy » Freeway
HOV Ln » High Occupancy Vehicle Lane
BR » Business Route
SR » State Route
CR » County Road
I-(94) » Interstate

| 43. How do I email a map or directions? |
 |

You can email a map or directions from the maps or directions results pages. You don't even have to be a registered member to use this feature. Above the map is an email icon. By clicking on this link you will be prompted to enter the email address of your recipient and your name and email address. These email addresses are used only to send the map or directions; they won't be added to any mailing lists.
| 44. In which edition of the Rand McNally Road Atlas can I use the page and grid numbers that are provided with the maps and directions I get on randmcnally.com?
|
 |

The page and grid reference numbers that are provided with our maps and driving directions can be used with the yellow-covered edition of the Road Atlas (United States, Canada and Mexico). To purchase a Road Atlas, click here.
| 45. The town I mapped on the site isn't in the Road Atlas grid square that you returned on my results page. Why? |
 |

Because of space and scale limitations, the Road Atlas does not show all of the towns that can be mapped on randmcnally.com. Even though you won't see the town in your Road Atlas, the grid section or detail map from your results page indicates the town's correct location.
| 46. Why can you find my address but not route me to it? |
 |

Occasionally we are not able to complete the beginning or ending of a route because data is not available for smaller or local roads in some areas. We recommend that you check local sources or get our step-by-step maps to see how to navigate from your starting point to the beginning of our directions, or from the ending of our directions to your destination.
| 47. Can you refresh my memory regarding latitude and longitude? |
 |

Latitude and longitude are used to express specific locations on Earth's surface. Lines of latitude (parallels) run east-west and measure the distance north or south of the equator (0º latitude). Lines of longitude (meridians) run north-south and measure the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian (0º longitude). The Prime Meridian is also known as the Greenwich Meridian because it passes through Greenwich, England. These measurements are used in maps, globes, and GPS software to provide precise location information.
| 48. What happened to your World Mapping Online section? |
 |

Unfortunately we are no longer able to provide the free World Mapping Online feature. We apologize for any inconvenience.
| 49. What geographical locations do you use when calculating routes or distances between cities when no specific address is entered? Is it the geographical center (determined by latitude and longitude), the main post office, City Hall, or something else? |
 |

Simply put, the locations selected when no address is entered are the ones determined to be the best starting and ending points for routing purposes. Often, but not always, the point is a city hall. In some cases, it may be a different point of reference with coordinates that best facillitate routing. In general, the points are determined using data provided by NAVTEQ. For locations not in NAVTEQ's database, the coordinates usually come from Rand McNally's Domestic Names File (DNF). These sources provide reliable starting and ending points regardless of whether a specific address is entered.
| 50. How do I enter my address for maps and directions if the residence number specifies a unit (example: 8225-D Main St.)? |
 |

Use a dash (8225-D) or no space (8225D) to indicate the residence number; if you leave a space between the number and the unit, the address might not be found.

| 51. How do I get directions to a National Park? |
 |

You can get directions to U.S. National Parks by entering the name of the National Park (i.e. Yellowstone National Park or Yellowstone NP) into the "city" field along with the state in which it is located on the Driving Directions page. You can even include a specific entrance for the park (i.e. Yellowstone National Park - East Entrance). Unfortunately routing to Canadian National Parks by name is not available right now.

 |

CustomView Wall Maps allow you to do what no other standard wall map does - create the exact map you want!
| 72. On the website it says, "usually ships within two days." When will I get my map? |
 |

CustomView Wall Maps generally take two business days to plot and print, and are then shipped FedEx 2-Day Air. So you will usually receive your order within 4 -5 business days from placement, often sooner!
| 73. Would someone be able to walk me through creating a CustomView Wall Map via phone? |
 |

Certainly! Just call our friendly Online Store Representatives at (800) 275-7263 Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Central Time or email us at store@randmcnally.com.
| 74. I have a Macintosh computer, can I access the CustomView website? |
 |

Yes. The CustomView website can be accessed from a Macintosh computer via the Mozilla Firefox web browser versions 1.5 and above. If you would like to download the browser, please visit: www.mozilla.com.
| 75. When I am refining my map, the detail seems to differ when I cover more area, what is happening? |
 |

Think of the zoom level bar as a "bird's eye" view of the map, the lower the bird is the more detail he can see. When you zoom out to try to cover larger areas, at some point you will lose the highest street level of detail. To cover the largest area with the highest detail, consider the largest size map and a mid-range zoom level.

| 76. I started to make a map, but had to exit the program. Do I have to start over? |

| 79. Will the ToolBox work with my GPS unit? |
 |

The ToolBox GPS feature is designed to work with any GPS unit that communicates with the NMEA standard and can be connected to one of your computer's communication ports. However, we cannot guarantee it will work with your particular GPS unit even if the unit meets those requirements.
| 80. When I e-mail a map why don't my User Points and/or Geocoded Points get sent along with the map? |
 |

Only drawings are attached. In order to send the User Points or Geocoded points with your map, the User Points database or the Geocoded Points database would have to be attached to the e-mail. We decided most users would not want their personal and/or business database e-mailed. To work around this, add points you want to send in your e-mail map as Markers, which are part of drawing files.

Search for the topic Getting Your Data Ready to Geocode. If you have the latest service pack, and your data is formatted correctly, then get the latest upgrade for your version of Windows from the Microsoft download center. | 102. Why won't my unit turn on? |
 |

There are two key steps to powering on the unit for the first time to inserting the included memory card and turning the unit's master switch to on. To do this, use the device stylus (stored in the lower left corner on the backside of the device), a ballpoint pen or similar item, move the switch on the bottom of the device to the "on" position. This process is highlighted on page 3 of the user guide.
| 103. How long will the system take to receive the first GPS signal? |
 |

The system can take up to approximately 10 minutes to initialize when the unit is used for the first time, if the unit has not been used for a long time, or if the unit is being used for the first time in a new city (i.e. after getting off a plane).
| 104. How long should the unit take to "lock" into the satellite signals? |
 |

You get the best signal when the device has a clear, open view of the sky. Additionally, the car should not be moving to allow the GPS signal to lock in accurately and quickly within a few minutes.
| 105. Why does my GPS receiver show I'm moving when I'm not? |
 |

The GPS satellites may on rare occasion broadcast a signal error that can account for up to 2.5 mph of movement.
| 106. How can I avoid a road? |
 |

You can simply turn onto a different road and the GPS Navigator will automatically and quickly calculate a new route choosing another road. Also, any time you tap quickly on the map, the "En Route" menu screen will come up giving you the option to detour. Either way you will be rerouted.
| 107. How can I find a restaurant in a city I'm planning to visit? |
 |

You can find a list of restaurants using the "Point of Interest" feature. From the main menu, press the navigate button. Or, if you are anywhere else in the application you can reach the navigation menu quickly by pressing the navigate button on the right side of your unit. Select "point of interest," then "in a different city." Select the name of the city, category of food and subcategory, and then the specific name. You can save the location for routing to later — see the "Turn-by-Turn Navigation" section in the user guide.
| 108. How many addresses can be stored in the unit? |
 |

That depends on the space available on the memory card. There is a potential for millions of saved addresses, however, that number will fluctuate depending on what you save to the card, routes, MP3s, etc.
| 109. Can I switch the languages used in the unit? |
 |

Yes. When you turn on your system for the first time, you will be asked to select a language (English, French, or Spanish). To change the language at a later date, you’ll need to toggle the hardware on/off switch at the bottom of the unit.
| 110. I have arrived at the point of interest (POI) I selected, yet my device is routing me through the front door. Is the route wrong? |
 |

The precise location of a POI (latitude and longitude) that has been mapped is generally the exact center of the building. If it is a large building, like a mall, the unit will attempt to route you to that center point. This happens rarely and is not a defect, more a case of the map being more precise than it needs to be.
| 111. Why am I getting an error message that says "Unable to calculate route?" |
 |

Your device may be unable to calculate the route chosen when it is unable to find a GPS signal, or if you are in a parking lot. Drive towards the nearest street and the unit will calculate the route and get you on your way.
| 112. Why isn't my road/destination in the unit? |
 |

Rand McNally has made every effort to provide you with the most accurate and up to date maps possible. However, due to the ever-changing nature of the data, occasionally newer roads and destinations may not be present in this current map. If you'd like to report an omission to Rand McNally, please contact us.
Additionally, if your destination is in an unincorporated area or a city that
uses a neighboring city's post office for its mailing address, try entering
your destination with the postal address (rather than the location's physical
address).
| 113. Why can't I enter my street number? |
 |

Prior to entering your street number you are required to enter the destination's street name.
| 114. Why does the city I selected default to a different zip code than the one I am looking for? |
 |

The device defaults to the zip code that is most common for your selected city. Some cities have multiple zip codes, so the device may default to a different zip code than the one to which you are traveling. If you know the zip code for your destination, entering it first will locate the address faster than a city search. If you do enter the city first and a different zip code defaults than that of your location, you do not need to re-enter the zip code. The unit will resolve this after the complete address is entered.
| 115. Why is my map frozen even though I am still receiving turn-by-turn directions? |
 |

The screen may occasionally "freeze" if it receives too many taps or instructions. Voice directions will still be heard because the application is still running. It will generally clear itself in a few minutes. If not, press the power button on the side of the unit to restart.
| 116. Can my location be tracked when I'm using my GPS system? |

 |

| 126. How accurate is GPS?
|
 |

It depends on the number of satellites, interference, etc, but 20 meters is average. As of May 2000, the Federal Government turned of SA (selective availablility) in GPS satellites. Prior to May 2000 GPS miscalculations were programmed into GPS transmissions to limit accuracy of non-military GPS receivers. Now GPS users enjoy excellent accuracy with GPS receivers of all types.
| 127. Will it handle interference from trees, clouds, and tall buildings?
|
 |

It will handle interference in the same way as many of the more expensive units. Clouds, non-moralized glass or convertible tops won't effect it, but trees, human bodies, buildings, or other objects will. The Rand McNally GPS unit uses a 12-channel GPS chipset made by Rockwell. All GPS units depend on a clear view of the sky, looking up at about 45 degrees around you. The satellites are NOT geo-synchronous however, so they will not be in the same place at all times. Sometimes the satellites will be near the horizon, sometimes not. (Note: this is why the unit will not always work in airplanes, trains, etc.) However, once the signal has been acquired, driving through brief sections of trees will usually be fine. You may notice the position on the map "drifting" as the view of the sky is temporarily blocked.
| 128. What are some of the things GPS will allow me to do?
|
 |

These tools will let you do many exciting things. Here are just a few ideas.
- Follow your progress. The GPS interface displays a dot or a trail of dots showing where you are and where you've been. You can combine this with map annotations to indicate where you are along a route, as well as your destination. To do this, follow these instructions: Using the drawing tools or the Walking Guide in StreetFinder, type in your starting address (Origin) and your ending address (Destination). Use the Walking Guide or other annotation tools to trace your expected route between these points. You can choose your own colors and line width to make the path very visible for viewing in the car. When you start GPS and your receiver acquires the GPS signal, you can track your progress against your expected path. As you get close to turns, or your destination, the GPS signal will tell you where you are. For TripMaker, just plan a route.
- Find information on the road. When you're traveling, you can tap into the wealth of location information and quickly find your way to important services. Imagine, for example, you need to find a bank for some cash. Here's all you have to do:
Pull over to the side of the road. Use your mouse to click your present location on the GPS trail. A label will appear. Click the label and choose Nearby Attractions. To find a bank in the listing, choose New Types, make sure that Banks has a check mark next to it, and click OK. Scroll through the list of banks. To narrow or widen the selection, use the Total Attractions Found Within radio button to change the radius of your search. To find the location of a specific bank, select it from the list and click the Show on Map button to display the location. Or click Close to view the bank icons on the map itself. You can follow the same procedure to find any of our one million listings in over 37 different categories, such as restaurants, hotels, flower shops, and even Rand McNally or Thomas Bros. retail stores (for those last-minute travel, luggage, or gift needs).
- Record where you've been. If you want to log miles or simply let others see the path you took, you may want to record a trip for later playback. StreetFinder/TripMaker GPS lets you do this easily: In the GPS menu, click Configure. Click the Monitor and Record radio button. Click the Select File button. Enter a file name in the File Name box and click Save. Click the OK button to finish your configuration settings. To begin recording your trip, select Start from the GPS menu. Select Stop to quit recording your trip. Note that newer editions of TripMaker / StreetFinder automatically name GPS files based on date and time. To play the file back: Select Configure from the GPS menu. Select the Playback radio button. Click the Select File button to bring up a list of saved trips. Select the trip of your choice, click Open, and then click OK to leave your configuration settings. Select Start from the GPS menu to begin the playback of your saved trip.
| 129. I really like the GPS feature but why aren't the maps easier to see?
|
 |

With TripMaker and StreetFinder Deluxe, you can select one of three types of screen display: Navigator, EZ View, and Map View. These screen displays allow you to control the way the GPS data is displayed and can help you view the maps in situations where lighting is poor, such as the inside of a car.
With StreetFinder, you can use any of the 11 different map styles to optimize the look of your map while en route, or create your own. The EZ Reading map style, with its larger fonts and higher contrast is great for daytime driving. The After Dark map style can accentuate your GPS locator pin on a dark background. If you have a particular color combination that works for you, you can also modify the background colors and map feature colors. To do this, click the Tools menu and select Map Styles. In the Map Styles dialog box, choose the base map style you wish to use. You can see the design of each map style in the Preview Window on the left side of the dialog box. We suggest you try EZ Reading because of its larger font. If this map style does not quite meet your needs, you can modify it further by changing the characteristics of the map elements. You can do this by selecting a map element (such as a highway) and then changing its colors and font. These changes also can be seen in the Preview Window.
| 130. Do you make GPS software for other countries? |
 |

As with our PC software, we are limited to bringing you the best in dgital mapping for the US only. Rand McNally is interested in producing non-US versions of of GPS software, but as yet have been unable to locate an electronic database that meets our standards for publication. Thanks for your interest, though, and check back with our web site periodically to find out more about our latest products, and whether we develop a Canadian version of StreetFinder.

| 131. I have trouble talking on a cellular phone while I am driving. Is it safe to use a GPS device in the car?
|
 |

You should never use a GPS device in a way that will interfere with your safe and attentive driving. If you are by yourself, pull over to the side of the road or wait until you are stopped at a stoplight to check your position. If you have a passenger and decide to use the GPS unit while the vehicle is in motion, do not put the computer or antenna where it may strike you or your passenger if the vehicle turns sharply or stops suddenly. You may also want to check local laws. In some states, the law limits or prohibits the use of electronic displays in vehicles. Finally, please remember that neither GPS nor maps can reflect all changes in routes and road conditions. Please pay attention at all times to road conditions, street signs, and other posted directional information. For any other questions regarding GPS, here's how to reach us:
Phone: 847/982-0944 - 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST Fax: 847/675-6368 Email: support@randmcnally.com

| 161. When I type in a city and state inside the Mileage Inquiry box, nothing happens. |
 |

Be sure and check the format of your city. Points need to be entered as City Name-comma-two letter state abbreviation. There is no space between the comma and the state code (example: ST LOUIS, MO). You may also enter a 5 digit ZIP code, SPLC, latititude/longitude, and junction.
| 162. I'm putting in MX for the state code of Mexico. Why are no cities being listed? |
 |

When entering Mexican points, you must also enter a state code for the respective state that the city you are using resides. All Mexican points are to be entered in the same manner that U.S. and Canadian locations are used. For example: Mexico City must be entered as "Mexico City, DF" This indicates it is in the state of Distrito Federal. Please consult the online help system for a complete Mexican state abbreviation list.
| 163. I have tried to zoom down to the map level of a town, but I do not see city streets. |
 |

The base IntelliRoute product does not contain street-level or Address to Address functionality. IntelliRoute Streets module is available for IntelliRoute. Please

| 167. How do I get State Mileage Breakdown for my route? |
 |

An easy way to select SMB is to go to the ROUTES menu. Then select HHG Full Route with SMB or Practical Route with SMB. This will then display the city entry dialogue box where the "with SMB" radial button will be selected. Once the route is calculated, State Mileage for each state traveled will be at the lower left of the itinerary screen.
| 168. Is there a way to add points to the system? What file format can I use? |
 |

Yes, you can import custom locations. If you go to the FEATURES menu, select "Import Locations." From here you can click "New" to manually add a point with a name and Latitude and Longitude coordinates. The other option is "Import" which will allow you to read from a comma delimited file with your data records spelled out. Once points are in the system, they may be used for Quickest and Lowest Cost Route Calculation.
| 169. In the past, IntelliRoute drew a map for Quickest and Lowest Cost Routes, but not for Practical. Is this still the case with Guide 19? |
 |

Practical Routing Maps will now be available with the release of Guide 19. Based on important customer feedback, this feature is now a part of the base product.
| 170. What does Smart City Browse do? |
 |

Smart City browse is an advanced fuzzy logic for validating cities that a user enters. The smart city enables users to either type a city or verify a state abbreviation. When the Smart City if turned off, a user will have to enter a two letter state abbreviation to validate that the city is in the system.

 |

Your privacy and security is very important to us, so we have developed a comprehensive Privacy and Security Policy. Please click on the link to view the entire policy.
| 175. Finding a location |
 |

To find the nearest location, enter as much address information as you have street address, city, state, and/or ZIP code. Our mapping software will find the closest location in our database. If we can't find an exact match for your address information, you may need to try again by entering only a state or ZIP code. This will give you several locations, and you will be able to see which one is nearest. We are not able to recognize things like post office boxes and apartment numbers. In some cases, the street or development you are looking for may be new or the street name you've entered may be spelled differently.

| 178. How do I set up my GPS receiver? |
 |

To set up your laptop GPS receiver, follow these quick steps:
1. Shut down your computer.
2. Attach the round (mouse) plug to your open mouse port and attach the square (serial) connection to your open serial port.
3. Restart your computer. After restarting, double-click the StreetFinder or Tripmaker Icon to start the program.
4. Once StreetFinder starts, press F9 on your keyboard to start GPS immediately.
| 179. Is your laptop GPS receiver compatible with Windows 2000? |
 |

Yes. If you are experiencing difficulties running GPS with Windows 2000, try the following:
- Power up your laptop BEFORE attaching the GPS unit.
- Once your system is properly booted, attach the PS/2 and serial connection from the GPS to your laptop.
This should make the GPS work smoothly with Windows 2000.
If you have further compatibility problems, please refer to Microsoft's Knowledge Base, article Q283063, which will tell you how to obtain a hotfix to resolve your compatibility problems.
| 180. How long does it take to first pick up the GPS signal? |
 |

The time to first fix is usually just a few minutes, if it is the first time you have used the unit. It can take as little as 30 seconds, if you have used it within the last 30 minutes. If you are stuck at the Navigator screen and it keeps flashing "Locating" for more than 30 minutes, call or email technical support.
| 181. What if I don't have a mouse (PS/2) port to power my GPS unit?
|
 |

Our Travel Store has lighter adapters available for $12.95 plus shipping. This adapter will allow you to power the GPS unit from your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter. Visit our the Travel Store or call us at 800/275-7263.
| 182. How much will it drain my laptop's battery? |
 |

The GPS unit actually uses less power than your laptop's CD drive. To save on battery power, we recommend doing a local map install of the area where you'll be traveling. If you have a 2-hour battery, you'll still get about 1.5 hours. If you have a 6-hour battery, you'll get about 4 to 5 hours.
| 183. Can I use it outside of the car or attach it to my car roof? |
 |

Yes, but it is intended for use inside a vehicle and is not weatherproof. Use it outside the vehicle at your own risk.
| 184. Do you make a USB version of the laptop GPS? |
 |

Rand McNally does not manufacture such a device, but we are always investigating ways to modify our GPS units to work with a wide range of hardware. We have done limited testing with serial to USB converters and have found that some versions will allow you to use the laptop GPS with a USB port. We are continuing to test as many options as possible.
That said, use these converters at your own risk. Most laptop manufacturers sell port replicators; we think this is a more desirable option.
| 185. Do I need a software update in order to use the Rand McNally Laptop GPS Receiver with StreetFinder or TripMaker?
|
 |

The unit will work fine with any version of StreetFinder or TripMaker that supports GPS. If you purchased your GPS unit as part of packaged bundle with StreetFinder Deluxe 1999 or StreetFinder Deluxe 2000, you have the latest software. If you purchased your unit separately and would like the latest update (which contains a few GPS enhancements) please download the StreetFinder or TripMaker update from our Download section.
| 186. Can I use this unit with other GPS software? In other countries? |
 |

Yes, as long as it is NMEA 0183 compatible. We have designed our receivers to work with a wide range of GPS software however it will not work with the following mapping software packages: Sony/Etak Sky Map 2000 and Delorme Software Products.
| 187. I'm having trouble getting started with your Rand McNally GPS unit. What should I do? |
 |

When you first plug your GPS receiver and start StreetFinder, you should be ready to go. The unit does not require drivers. Just click Start on the StreetFinder GPS menu. If your unit has a clear view of the sky, you should start seeing your current position on the map within a few minutes. If for some reason the GPS icon does not appear, use the following checklist:
Stop the current GPS session (F10 key) then restart it. This may be all that you need to do.
Verify that you have a clear view of the sky. The receiver will not initialize if the view of the sky is blocked. For this reason the receiver will not work indoors.
Make sure BOTH receiver plugs are plugged into the computer. The serial (square) connector and PS/2 (round) connector need to be plugged into your laptop computer before GPS will work.
Is the COM port disabled? To check this, open your Device Manager (Start>Settings>Control Panel>System). On the Device Manager tab click the "+" sign next to Ports (Com & LPT). If you see a red check mark next to one of the ports, this means it is disabled. Simply highlight the port, click the Properties button and re-enable the port. Do this for any port that has a red check mark next to it. Restart your system, and then retry the GPS unit.
Have you disabled Hotsync and/or Active Synch (Palm & CE services)? Both programs use your laptop's COM port and will not allow another program to use it. Make sure Hotsync and/or Active Synch are disabled. The easiest way to do this is to click Ctl+Alt+Delete, then select the appropriate program and choose End Task. Also, if your laptop is used as a docking station, you may have Infrared ports enabled. IR ports load a program in memory called "irmon" that will not allow the receiver to be initialized. End Task on "Irmon" from your "Close Program" list as well.
Are you using a standard PS/2 driver? We have noted some issues with using the Synaptics Touch Pad driver as opposed to the standard PS/2 driver. Using the Standard PS/2 driver will correct GPS problems in this case.
Is the correct COM port selected? With your GPS receiver plugged into your laptop, you can check this with the HyperTerminal application that comes with Microsoft Windows. To use HyperTerminal:
1. Click on START, select RUN. In the Open field type: " hypertrm" (no quotes)
2. Click OK to open the HyperTerminal program
3. Enter "GPSTEST" for the name, and click OK.
4. In the Phone Number dialog box, select Direct to COM 1 in the "Connect Using" field. Then click OK. 5. In the Com 1 Properties dialog box, select 4800 Bits per second, 8 Data bits, Parity None, and Stop bits 1. Click OK. 6. You should see a long string of letters and numbers indicating the signal is reaching your PC. The output will look like this: $GPRMC,005027,A,4207.4412,N,08753.8659,W,0.000,0.0,230799,2.4,W*7F
If you do not see this, close the connection and repeat step 4, selecting another COM port. Once you see the data stream on the screen, you will know which port to use. Reopen the StreetFinder and select GPS>Settings>Communication settings. Change to the correct COM port and click on OK. On the StreetFinder GPS menu select Start. TripMaker or StreetFinder will automatically configure itself to the GPS unit and start. It may take at least 5 minutes for the GPS to get a good view of the satellites and begin displaying your position. Remember, TripMaker or StreetFinder needs to have a view of at least 4 satellites in order to show your position on the map.If for any reason, your GPS unit fails to initialize and show your position on the map, please call or email technical support at 866-RMC-TECH (866-762-8324) or support@randmcnally.com.

 |

No. Mobile Travel Tools is a wireless application that is downloaded via a Java-enabled phone.
| 197. Will my saved locations be available after I renew the application? |
 |

That depends on your carrier. If your carrier requires that you reinstall the program to renew it, your saved locations will be overwritten. If your carrier allows you to renew without reinstalling, your saved locations will remain.
| 198. When I try to install the program, I get an error message indicating that certain files are not available. Why is this? |
 |

This error message indicates that one or more Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) programs are still running on your computer. When you see this error message, cancel installation and quit all TSR programs before you try to install the program again. Installing Programs in Windows® 95 will tell you how to quit TSR programs. If any of the following scenarios occur, you need to go to our download area and download the update for New Millennium: | | | | All TSR programs are closed, and installation still results in an error message. | | | | Any error indicating that a .dll file is unable to transfer during installation. | |
| 199. Why is the ocean appearing as gray? |
 |

Make sure that the color palette is set to SVGA with High Color 16-bit. Also, make sure that the video card & monitor support this type of setting. If this does not clear the error, update the driver for the video card.

| 201. How do I install on a computer with more than one hard drive or more than one partitioned drive? |
 |

Follow the same instructions found in the Instruction Manual. When the drive path is changed make sure a Folder name follows. For example: d:\nmillnm98
| 202. I'm having trouble getting started with another brand of GPS unit. What should I do? |
 |

There may be several causes:
Have you disabled Hotsync and/or Active Synch (Palm & CE services)? Both programs use your laptop's COM port and will not allow another program to use it. Make sure Hotsync and/or Active Synch are disabled. The easiest way to do this is to click Ctl+Alt+Delete, then select the appropriate program and choose End Task.
Is your GPS unit putting out signals to the PC? Many GPS units come with this feature turned off. After you plug in the cable, you will need to consult your GPS manual to determine how to turn on the NMEA output. If the GPS unit still fails to initialize, you can use HyperTerminal to debug the problem. This is a standard component of Windows. To use HyperTerminal:
1. Clickon START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/COMMUNICATIONS. (If you do not see it, install it from your Windows disks.) Open the HyperTerminal, enter GPSTEST for the name, and click OK.
2. Select "Direct to COM Port 1" at the bottom of the window, selecting the correct port. Then click OK.
3. On this next screen, select 4800 baud, 8,N,1, then OK.
4. You should see a long string of letters and numbers indicating the signal is reaching your PC. If you do not see this, close the connection and repeat step 2, selecting another port and retry. Once you see the data stream on the screen, you will know which port to use.
Reopen the StreetFinder and select GPS/SETTINGS/COMMUNICATION settings. Change to the correct COM port and click on OK. Click on GPS/START. TripMaker or StreetFinder will automatically configure itself to the GPS unit and start. It may take at least 5 minutes for the GPS to get a good view of the satellites and begin displaying your position. Remember, TripMaker or StreetFinder needs to have a view of at least 4 satellites in order to show your position on the map.
Is your unit compatible with Rand McNally software? NMEA is considered a "loose" standard. Rand McNally supports the most common NMEA 0183 v2.0 and 1.5 signals, as well as most Garmin, Etak/Sony and Magellan units. If your unit does not work, please email us with a sample of the output (using HyperTerminal as described below) so we can consider posting an update to the Web site for your unit.
Sony/Etak - Sky Map Pro 2000 serial GPS (this unit uses a proprietary format) Delorme Earthmate and Tripmate (this unit uses a proprietary format)
We would encourage you to contact the original manufacturer of your GPS receiver if you cannot find your answer here.
| 203. I am using a Garmin GPS unit. How do I set this unit up to work with your StreetFinder software? |
 |

The Garmin GPS unit requires an interface cable that can be attached to your laptop computer (contact Garmin to obtain a cable for your specific unit). Once you have attached the interface cable to your laptop, make sure your Garmin unit's "Interface" settings are correctly set (use the list below for your particular unit).
GPS III Plus - Set "Interface" settings to "NMEA" GPS 12 - Set "Interface" settings to "NONE/NMEA" StreetPilot ColorMap - Set "Interface" settings to "NMEA Out"
For any other questions regarding the use of these units, please consult your manual. Garmin also maintains users manuals for all of their products on their web site at http://www.garmin.com/support/userManual.html.
Once you have properly configured your Garmin GPS: Open StreetFinder and select GPS/SETTINGS Under "GPS Type" select one of the Garmin settings (Older or
Newer). Select "Monitor" mode then click OK. Start GPS by pressing your F9 key or selecting GPS start from the StreetFinder Deluxe 2000 menu.
| 204. Can I upload and or download waypoint information using the Garmin GPS?
|
 |

This functionality is not supported in StreetFinder Deluxe 2000. When using the NMEA interface setting on the Garmin unit, this places it in receiver mode. StreetFinder simply interprets this NMEA data.
| 205. I am using the Navman e Series USB GPS unit with StreetFinder Deluxe on Windows XP. When I start the GPS, it locates satellites but locks up my computer.
|
 |

In some instances, running the USB unit with Windows XP will cause this type of behavior. Our technical support/development team is currently investigating this issue and we hope to implement an appropriate fix very soon. In the meantime, you can try this workaround which should allow you to use the GPS without having system lockups:- Start StreetFinder and then click on GPS>Run GPS Demo.
- Allow the GPS demo to run for at least one minute then stop the demo (F10 key).
- Select GPS>Settings from the main menu and check the Monitor circle.
- Click OK.
- Restart the GPS by pressing F9 on your keyboard or selecting GPS>Start from the menu.
Your GPS session should run without any problems.

| 211. Why isn't the Palm V receiver rechargeable?
|
 |

The Palm V GPS receiver was designed to be sleek and light, to match the Palm V organizer. The dry cell batteries take up less space and weigh less than the circuitry needed for recharging.
| 212. Why don't you have a power off switch?
|
 |

This was for ease-of-use, and to increase battery life. The GPS unit will automatically shut down after 90 seconds if the unit is either detached from the Palm organizer or the unit is still connected, but no application is running that uses GPS.
| 213. Why is there a 90 second delay before power automatically shuts off on the GPS receiver?
|
 |

This feature allows Palm organizer users to transfer to other applications (such as the calendar to check on an appointment), without losing the GPS signal. The user can then start StreetFinder within 90 seconds and their position will be instantly shown, without having to wait the 30 seconds to 2 minutes for GPS satellite signal acquisition.
