Middletown was created in 1743 when Newport residents living "in the woods" petitioned to have their own town. Still largely rural in character, the town retains several early farm buildings and country estates built by Newport's first generation of wealthy merchants. The town has long been noted for such natural features as Purgatory Chasm, Hanging Rock, and its fine beaches. At Prescott Farm, you'll find several restored buildings, including a working windmill where you can buy fresh ground meal and a museum with early Pilgrim furnishings. Norman Bird Sanctuary offers seven miles of trails through such diverse habitats as fields, swamp woodlands, and grassy bluffs. You can also visit Whitehall Museum House, built by Bishop Berkeley in 1729, and the Newport Vinyards and Winery, which offer tours and tastings. For more information on Middletown, contact the Newport County Convention & Visitor's Bureau.
