Crater of Diamonds State Park, AR

Categories: Sports & Recreation; Outdoor Adventures

Since 1906, when landowner John Huddleston found the first one, more than 75,000 diamonds have been found at the "Crater," an eroded volcanic pipe. More than 600 diamonds are discovered in the 37.5-acre diamond field each year; some of them, like the 40.23-carat Uncle Sam diamond, are sizeable indeed. And diamonds aren't the only treasure to be uncovered at Crater of Diamonds. The park is a rockhound's delight, with plenty of amethyst, agate, jasper, garnet, and a number of other minerals and semiprecious stones just waiting for some lucky visitor. If you find something you think may be valuable, bring it to the Diamond Discovery Center for free identification. Whether it's a diamond or not, if you find it, it's yours.
The park covers 888 wooded acres along the banks of the Little Missouri River. A visitor center, interpretive exhibits, picnic areas, and restaurant are located at the facility, as well as a modern campground (water and electric hookups available). Handicapped-accessible sites are available. The sites are first-come, first-served, but reservations are recommended. The 1.2-mile Luttle Missouri River Trail follows a scenic, level path down to the river and loops back. Park staff hold orientation programs daily and summer evening programs on a host of topics related to the park.
Pets: Leashed pets are permitted.
Fees: Daily fees for use of the park are as follows: Ages 13 and up - $6; children 6-12 - $3; under 6 years old - free. Fees are subject to change without notice. These fees are over and above the campsite fees. Groups of 15 or more may search for diamonds at a reduced rate, with advanced notice.
