Salton Sea

Categories: Fun & Games; Sports & Recreation; Outdoor Adventures

The Salton Sea is California's largest lake and one of the world's largest inland seas with 110 miles of shoreline at 227 feet below sea level. Fishing, swimming, boating, nature trails, bird watching, and developed and primitive camping -- including desert camping -- are all available. The park is 30 miles south of Indio on Hwy 111.
Pets: Leashed pets are permitted on campgrounds but not on any trails, on most beaches, and in park buildings. Guide dogs are exempt from these restrictions.
Reservations, fees, and requirements: California has a central telephone number for reservations at state park campgrounds: 800-444-7275. There is a nonrefundable fee charged for each reservation made. Reservations are highly recommended for all campsites. Most state parks charge a nominal day-use fee, which varies from park to park depending on facilities. Appropriate California hunting and fishing licenses are required to engage in these activities.
