The swamp is a living system of shallow, flowing waterways on a plateau 103 to 128 ft above sea level. Its waters, islands, and halfway marshes cover nearly 700 square miles. Cypress trees dripping with moss give the preserved wetlands of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge an air of mystery. The refuge supports wildlife ranging from bears, deer, bobcats, and alligators to aquatic birds, and a variety of unusual plant life. Visit the Visitor Center to see feature films, live exhibits, and lectures, or explore the swamps via a guided boat tour. The east entrance is located 11 miles SW of Folkston off Hwys 121 and 23.
