One of the best and most accessible white-sand beaches on the island, Hapuna Beach is wide and spacious, with excellent swimming when calm seas permit. In times of high surf, however, rip currents make venturing into the water treacherous, so beware when the waves begin to hit three feet high. A small cove at the north end of the beach is always calm and safe; this spot is a magnet for families. Scuba diving, shore fishing, and snorkeling are good. The park has A-frame shelters available for overnight stays. Each has sleeping platforms that can accommodate four people. Restrooms, cold showers, electric outlets, and a shared kitchen facility are available nearby. To reserve a shelter, call Hawaii State Parks. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted. Pets are not allowed, however, in buildings, campgrounds, or on beaches. Restrictions: There is an alcohol ban, which is strictly enforced.
