Starved Rock State Park, with its 18 canyons, waterfalls, and wooded bluffs, is considered one of Illinois' best hiking spots. There are 13 miles of moderately difficult trails that wind through the park. Stair-step connector trails link the canyon floor with the bluff tops, where hikers are rewarded with spectacular views. Park trails are also available for horseback riding and cross-country skiing (horses are available to rent). The Illinois River runs through the park and provides excellent fishing and boating. While exploring the park, visitors should take a few minutes to read the informative markers, which give a lot of interesting information about the history of the area. The park visitor center is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM weekdays and is closed on major holidays. Schools groups and other organized groups may arrange for special programs by calling ahead to 815-667-4906. Accommodations include a campground and a rustic lodge, built in part in the 1930s of stone and logs. The lodge's Great Room features one of the largest stone fireplaces in Illinois. At the lodge you have a choice of 22 cabin rooms or 72 hotel rooms. Guests may use the indoor swimming pool, kids' pool, and sauna. Please call ahead for reservations and room fees at the lodge. If you'd rather camp, 100 of the 133 sites are available by reservation. You must call the park for the reservation form or download it from the website. The rest of the sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Alcohol is prohibited in campgrounds and on hiking trails year-round, while it is prohibited in picnic areas from January 1 to May 31. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted in the park and campgrounds, but they are not permitted in the lodge.
