Located at the eastern edge of Anderson, Indiana, Mounds State Park sits in the vicinity of some fascinating prehistoric remnants of North America's past. Ten massive earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell Indians 2,000 years ago dot the area. The largest of these, the "Great Mound," is thought to date back to 160 BC. These mysterious mounds give mute testimony to the region's prehistoric heritage. The park offers campsites for tents and trailers, hiking trails, and a new nature center with a bird-viewing room and small animal display. Activities range from swimming and fishing to hiking. Half of the campsites require reservations while the other half are first-come, first-served. Located off I-69, east of Anderson. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted and must be attended at all times. Reservations: For Indiana state parks, use the central reservations system at www.camp.IN.gov or by calling 866-622-6746.
