Famous for the jazz clubs and restaurants that line Bourbon Street, the French Quarter is much more than a nightspot. This historic district is the oldest section of New Orleans, dating back to 1718, and is also called the Vieux Carre, or "old square." In it you will see architecture reflecting the city's Spanish, French, Caribbean, and British influences through 300 years of history. It was a haven for free people of color and for slaves, whose musical heritage gave birth to jazz and the blues. Jackson Square, the heart of the Quarter, is home to street performers and artists; its St. Louis Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the country. The streets are lined with mansions, homes, and buildings that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The French Market also offers antique shopping.
