This island to the south of Cape Cod is a popular summer vacation destination and has 14 public beaches. South Beach at Edgartown is popular for swimming and bodysurfing. Joseph Sylvia State Beach near Oak Bluffs has a great view of Cape Cod. Other beaches include Lighthouse, Moshup (Aquinnah), Eastville, Menemsha, Oak Bluffs, Owen Park, East, Fuller STreet, Lake Tashmoo, Long Point, Norton Point, and Tisbury. Most swimming takes place in July and August, when the high temperature reaches 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Vacation season runs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
