Nantucket Island is a favorite vacation destination for New Englanders, a two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride from Cape Cod. The Whaling Museum is full of fascinating scrimshaw, ship models, and ships' logs. Nantucket's streets are lined with handsome houses from its past as a whaling port. Visit the Jethro Coffin House (1686; the oldest house on Nantucket), the Old Mill (1746), built of wood from wrecked ships; the Hadwen House (1845), a Greek Revival mansion; and the Old Gaol (1805). Tennis, golf, fishing, windsurfing, biking, hiking, and birdwatching are popular. The many fine beaches include the Jetties, near the harbor, and Madaket, at the island's western end.
