Located on the point of land where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Potomac River, this park was once the site of a Civil War prisoner-of-war camp and features two miles of beach, equally divided between the bay and the river. Most beach activities take place along the river, which has a sand and pebble strand. The park features a museum that chronicles the prison and the history of the region, and beachcombers, on occasion, still find Civil War-era artifacts washed up on shore. Anglers fish from the park's pier or from water's edge. You can take your boat out on the bay or into the river (a boat launch is located on site and rentals are available), and hikers enjoy exploring the park's piney woods and marshy grasslands. The park offers camping and six cabins (by reservation only). Campsite reservations are recommended though not required. A nominal day-use fee is charged. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted in certain areas. Please call for information. Reservations: For all state campground reservations, please call the central reservation number 888-432-2267.
