Accessible only by boat, Monhegan Island is a destination filled with enchanting contrasts. The only village, home to generations of lobster men, serves as a backdrop for an established summer artist colony. Rustic accommodations have only recently acquired electricity, yet they feature sophisticated menus and indulgences such as afternoon tea. The 17-mile footpath that covers two-thirds of the island traverses craggy sea cliffs as well as isolated coves and contemplative pine stands. Ten miles long and a half mile wide, the island has a year-round population of only 75 (1,200 in summer). There are no cars. The visitor should bring practical shoes, a windbreaker, and an appreciation for a slower, simpler way of life.
