The first Soo Lock was built in 1855 by the state of Michigan. The locks provide a way around the rapids at St. Mary's Falls. The locks have been operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since 1881. A hydroelectric power plant is at the north end of the locks. Private boat tours are available at Sault Ste. Marie. The visitors center has observation platforms with closed-circuit television monitors announcing the coming and going of the Great Lakes freighters. The lock system is visible from the platforms.
