A natural wilderness, this 32,690-acre park is heavily forested with a range of varied terrains. Lake Itasca State Park was established in 1891 and it is the oldest of the Minnesota state parks. It contains more than 100 lakes, ponds, and streams, with the headwaters of the Mississippi River flowing out of its Lake Itasca. Park activities include hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and canoeing. The small lake beach (which can sometimes get a little crowded because of the park's popularity) is great for swimming and sunbathing from June through August. Motorboating on the lake is restricted to speeds under 10 mph. In winter there are groomed cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails. Bike, boat, canoe, and snowshoe rentals are available. Accommodations include a lodge, cabins, and camping sites. Handicapped-accessible sites and facilities are available. Backcountry camping is permitted. Reservations are strongly recommended for all campsites, and they are required for the cabins and the lodge. Located on Hwy 71, 21 miles north of Park Rapids. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted. Reservations, restrictions, and fees: Minnesota has a central reservation telephone number for all state park campgrounds: 866-857-2758. There is a nonrefundable fee for each reservation made. Minnesota state parks charge a nominal daily entrance fee per vehicle. Minnesota enforces an alcohol ban in all of its state campgrounds.
