Founded in 1709, Beaufort is the third-oldest town in North Carolina and a former prowling ground for pirates. Blackbeard ran his ship, Queen Anne's Revenge0 , aground here in 1718. Divers recovered what is believed to be that same ship in 1996, just off the coast. Once a busy fishing village, Beaufort is filled with antique shops and restaurants, and boats still dock on the waterfront. Historic Beaufort includes restored 18th and 19th century homes and a cemetery with the grave of Otway Burns, an American privateer in the War of 1812.
