The nation's first documented discovery of gold occurred here. The visitor's center features a film and exhibits. Guided tours of a restored mine, a nature/hiking trail, and picnic area are available. The restored mine tour and viewing an operating nineteenth-century stamp mill (once used to crush ore) are free. Panning is available from April 1 to October 31 and is $2 per pan. There are different events offered throughout the year: the History Bowl (in March), Heritage Day, Festival of Gold (June), the Haunted Mine, and Bloody Reign of the Mad Miner (Halloween event). The center is open 9 AM to 5 PM on Tuesday thru Saturday from April 1st to October 31st; the rest of the season's hours are Tuesday thru Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM. Located off Hwy 200.
