At 6,288 feet, Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast. This park sits atop the peak and attracts visitors from all over the world. Scenic views and drives are available, as are walking trails and picnic areas. Other facilities include a gift shop, the Tip Top House, and a weather observatory. In 1934, a windspeed of 231 mph was recorded at the observatory, the highest windspeed ever recorded on the earth's surface. If you want to drive up, the Mt. Washington Auto Road begins off Rte 16, eight miles south of Gorham.
