Perhaps most well known as the site for James Dickey's novel Deliverance which was later turned into a Hollywood movie starring Burt Reynolds, the Chattooga River originates high up in the Carolina Mountains and passes through the Sumter and Chattahoochee National Forests. Nationally designated as a Wild and Scenic River in 1974, the Chattooga divides South Carolina from Georgia. Best suited for outdoor enthusiasts with some previous experience with whitewater, local outfitters provide guided tours down portions of the river. In Greenville, seventy miles east of the Chattooga, find the Greenville County Museum of Art with a collection of Southern paintings and contemporary art.
