Located 30 miles northwest of Aiken along SC 28, Abbeville is know as both the birthplace and deathbed of the Confederacy (Jefferson Davis held his last war council here in May of 1865). This small, quaint town is a true gem of South Carolina history. Its historic district preserves a number of Greek Revival and Victorian-era homes and buildings, among them the Opera House on Court Square. The three-story, brick structure dates from the early 1900s, when minstrel shows and Shakespearean theater troupes stopped overnight in Abbeville to entertain audiences. Today the Opera House has been restored to its early 20th-century splendor and houses a repertory theater. Reservations are taken Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM. (864-366-2157)
