Spartanburg is a historic town with a rich sense of culture and community. It is home to a branch of the University of South Carolina as well as a number of other colleges. Rustic log cabins, elegant antebellum plantations, and more than a dozen registered landmarks provide much to see. The Jammie Seay House dates to 1790 and is believed to be the oldest standing house in the county. The Regional Museum of Spartanburg County features antique dolls as well as a number of other permanent exhibits.
Twichell Auditorium is a beautiful and acoustically excellent place to catch a concert; it is the home of the Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and hosts top-name international soloists. The Spartanburg Civic Ballet offers a repertoire of classics and jazz. The Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium ("The Showplace of the South") features touring Broadway shows, concerts, sports, and special events. More theater can be found at the Spartanburg Little Theatre, which puts on four productions a year ranging from drama to light comedy to musicals.
South of town (near Roebuck), tour Walnut Grove, an 18th-century plantation with a restored main house, outbuildings such as a doctor's office, and trails that lead through beautiful Hatcher Gardens. Cowpens National Battlefield is located in nearby Chesnee.
