This exceptional museum on the campus of the University of South Dakota boasts one of the most complete instrument collections in the world. Packed with more than 10,000 American, European, and non-Western instruments from almost all cultures and time periods, the museum's eight galleries display some of the world's rarest instruments, its diverse collection ranging from banjos, recorders, pianos and harpsichords to a Stradivarius mandolin, guitar, and violin.
The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM; Sunday from 2 PM to 5 PM. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Admission (which includes a 50-stop, self-guided audio tour) is free; suggested donations of $7 for adults and $3 for students are encouraged. The facility is handicap accessible.
