Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area stretches for 90 miles from southwestern Wyoming into northeastern Utah. Its 207,363 acres are divided between the two states and each state offers a different face of this winding and scenic river gorge. Here, centuries ago, Fremont Indians lived. Evidence of their passing exists in the petroglyphs that adorn the rockfaces of may caves that line the gorge. The national recreation area offers a wealth of exciting recreations and opportunities for exploration. For reservations call: 435-789-1181. Fun at Flaming Gorge centers on the massive reservoir formed by the Flaming Gorge Dam. Powerboating, windsurfing, fishing and sailing are just a few of the ways you can enjoy the cool waters. Further south, white-water rafting in the tumbling waters (no permits nor commercial guides are required, but be careful!) is the recreation of choice. Across the state border in New Mexico, south of the Flaming Gorge Dam, is a fast stretch of the Green River on which outfitters organize white-water raft tours through the Ashley National Forest and redrock gorges.
