Jagged peaks and towering buttes help make the otherworldly landscape of Monument Valley one of the most dramatic areas in the West. The valley lies at an elevation of 5,564 feet in southeastern Utah. The Navajo have preserved this valley as a tribal park with a 17-mile scenic drive and visitors center. You can tour the valley on the self-guided driving tour, through commercial jeep tours, or on horseback. Hiking trails are restricted to guided tours only. Year-round camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Winter camping requires self-contained campers as facilities are closed. Summer hours are 7 am to 7 pm. Winter hours are 8 am to 5 pm. To reach the park from Mexican Hat, UT, drive 22 miles southwest on US 163 and turn east 3.5 miles to the visitor center. Fees: A nominal entrance fee is charged per person for day-use of the park.
