Thomas Jefferson designed and built this estate, where he lived for most of his adult life, to meet his own exacting standards for efficiency and architectural proportion. The house is a brick octagon, constructed in the Roman neoclassic style, with terraces extending to the north and south like wings. The house with its dependencies, its garden, and its plantation are all open for tours.
