This collection of 172 named islands, and hundreds more unnamed, in Puget Sound are a wonderland of sailing, kayaking, whale watching, sport fishing and golf. There are hundreds of great Scuba diving spots off Henry, Stewart and Waldron islands, and in the Underwater Marine Reserves of Fort Casey, Deception Pass and Birch Bay state parks. At San Juan National Historic Park on San Juan Island there are two partially reconstructed 1860s camps. American camp is on a wind-swept prairie with a beach, mountain views, hiking trails and excellent bird watching, especially raptors. British camp is on a sheltered bay, a popular boating destination, and has a reconstructed British formal garden and trails to the look-out post on Mt. Young. Visit the information center and Whale Museum in Friday Harbor. Lopez Island is slow and friendly, with a great Perimeter Loop 32-mile bike trail and whale viewing. Orcas Island, sunnier than the others, has charming villages, arts and crafts galleries, views, lakes, waterfalls, campgrounds, a nature sanctuary and the best sea kayaking.
