This beautiful, cosmopolitan city nestled at the foot of the magnificent Coast Mountains on the Strait of Georgia is the busiest port on the west coast of the Americas. Provincial parks in the mountains offer sightseeing and outdoor sports, especially skiing. Among the myriad of city sights are the Vancouver Museum; Vancouver Maritime Museum; and Vancouver Art Gallery; fascinating Chinatown; Gastown with its steam clock; the Capilano Suspension Bridge; and the unique Canada Place convention center and cruise ship dock.
The many parks include Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre combination of old-growth forests, lakes, beaches, rose gardens, an aquarium, hiking and biking trails, cricket fields, tennis courts, and an excellent collection of totem poles. Queen Elizabeth Park has beautiful outdoor gardens and Bloedel Floral Conservatory, which is in a geodesic dome that shelters with free-flying birds. Also see Van Dusen Botanical Garden and the gardens at the University of British Columbia.
The superior artistry of the Northwest Coastal native people forms an excellent collection in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia; European and Asian cultures are represented too.
Also of interest are the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre; B.C. Place Stadium and General Motors Place, sites of shows and major sports events; and Granville Island with its public market, artists' studios, and fine restaurants.
