Winnipeg, capital of Manitoba, has a lively cosmopolitan flair but does not forget its colorful history. Its imposing Provincial Legislative Building has a grand marble staircase worthy of Versailles but distinctly Western. Attractions include museums, art galleries, an IMAX theater, riverboat cruises, rail excursions, and professional sporting events. Assiniboia Downs offers Thoroughbred racing. Assiniboine Park has a conservatory, miniature train ride, and Leo Mol sculpture garden, and the zoo exhibits more than 1,700 animals, including many endangered species. Sir Hugh John Macdonald's Dalnaver Museumt, Ross House Museum, Seven Oaks House Museum, and The Forks National Historic Site recall Winnipeg's 19th-century past. In contrast, visitors admire the interesting contemporary architecture of downtown Winnipeg. Art, theater, music, and ballet have an important role at the beautiful Centennial Concert Hall, home of the internationally famous Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The Winnipeg Symphony is one of Canada's greatest; the Winnipeg Art Gallery has the world's largest collection of Inuit art. Also visit Western Canada Aviation Museum; Manitoba Children's Museum; Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, a fur-trading-era living-history site; and enjoy the many festivals. In the St. Boniface area, visit the Festival du Voyageur in February; also St. Boniface Museum (1846), housed in the largest oak log structure in North America; St. Boniface Basilica; and the Royal Canadian Mint.
