Overview. Wood Buffalo is one of Canada's largest national park, and one of the world's largest conservation areas. Although it is most famous for protecting one of the world's largest free-roaming bison herds, the park also protects two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Peace-Athabasca Delta, one the world's largest freshwater deltas, and the only remaining nesting ground of the endangered whooping crane.

Gently flowing streams meander through boreal forest and some odd geologic wonders. The park's unusual topography is made up of sinkholes, underground rivers, salt plains, and sunken valleys. More than 46 species of mammals and 220 species of wildfowl inhabit the park. The Peace-Athabasca Delta in particular is a major stopover point on several of the largest bird migration routes.

What to see and do. Activities include hiking, picnicking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and swimming. A number of developed trails lead to backcountry campsites. The trails are suitable for both novices and seasoned hikers. Backwoods camping is permitted anywhere in the park, provided it is 1,500 meters or more from Pine Lake and any roads or trails. Pine Lake and the Peace and Athabasca rivers are ideal for canoeing and kayaking. During the winter, visitors can cross-country ski or take dogsled trips out of nearby Fort Smith. Contact the park for information on available interpretive programs.

The main visitors center is located in the town of Fort Smith. It features a multimedia theatre as well as beautiful interpretive exhibits. Fort Smith offers basic services for travelers. The park also has a visitors center and office in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta.

Pets: Leashed pets are allowed.
