Overview. The province of Saskatchewan is nestled between Alberta and Manitoba in Canada's Heartland, abutting the state of Montana to the south and the Northwest Territories to the north. More than half of the 250,000-square-mile region is covered by forest land and wilderness, offering many opportunities to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Prince Albert National Park comprises nearly one million acres of boreal forest, fescue grassland, spruce bog, and glacial lakes, rivers, and creeks. As you travel from south to north, the landscape changes in character from sedge meadows to boreal forest, changes that are also reflected in the local wildlife. Coyote, bison, and other prairie animals dominate the southern portions of the park. Further north you'll find eagle, bear, moose, wolf, and caribou species. Waskesiu Lake and its surrounding townsite (located along the southern shore) are the hub of activity in Prince Albert National Park. Some neighboring lakes are also popular spots for water recreation, such as Kingsmere and Crean. What to see and do. Before setting out in a canoe or on a hiking trail, stop by the Information Center in the town of Waskesiu for advice on how to see the park. Here you'll find information on local wildlife, hiking and trail conditions, and an up-to-date weather forecast. After you've gathered some information on the region, head over to the Nature Center, where you'll find interpretive exhibits on local habitats and ecosystems. The Nature Center also offers a variety of interpretive programs and guided hikes. There is plenty of lodging in Waskesiu. You can rent a concessionaire-operated cabin or bungalow, or book a hotel room. Two campgrounds are centrally located: the Waskesiu Trailer Park and Beaver Glen. The town also offers resort-style activities, such as tennis courts, a golf course, and lawn bowling greens. You can rent mountain bikes, or, if you prefer water recreation, choose from any number of boat rentals, motorboats, canoes and kayaks. Those who want to explore the backcountry can choose among hiking, canoe, cycling, and cross-country ski trails. A one-week canoe trip leads you along the western shore of Lake Kingsmere and through a chain of wilderness lakes. Another popular place to visit by canoe or on foot is Grey Owl's Cabin, a historic park feature located on the shores of Lake Ajawaan. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted but not on any beaches. Reservations, restrictions, and fees: Park campgrounds are both reserved and first-come, first-served. Reservations can be made at 306-663-4513. Alcohol is permitted with some restrictions. A daily park entrance fee is charged.
