Kobuk Valley National Park

Overview. Glaciation and wind have created Kobuk Valley's most striking feature: 25 square miles of sand dunes, the most extensive active field north of the Arctic Circle. Located along the central portion of the Kobuk River, the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes and the Little and Hunt River Sand Dunes play host to summer temperatures as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The fossils of Ice Age mammals are captured in the 150-foot-high sand bluffs that also line the river. The Kobuk Valley, flanked by the Baird Mountains to the north and the Waring Mountains to the south, has long been host to migrating caribou herds. The archaeological site at Onion Portage reveals that man has hunted caribou in the area for more than 9,000 years.
What to see and do.
The gentle Kobuk River is perfect for float trips and rafting, as well as canoeing, kayaking, and motorboating. Wilderness hiking and camping are popular within the park, but note that there are no maintained trails or designated campgrounds. Wildlife abounds, especially during the spring and autumn caribou migrations. The Salmon River, also within the park, has been named a National Wild and Scenic River. Fishing is allowed with an Alaska fishing license; all state regulations apply. Sport hunting is not permitted in Kobuk Valley National Park. Access is by air, water, or on foot during the summer season; all other times of the year the park may be reached only by air or snow machine.
The Kotzebue Public Lands Information Center is open 8 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Friday, with longer hours during the summer. As Kobuk Valley National Park contains many unmarked parcels of private land, contact Kotzebue Public Lands Information Center for land status information to avoid trespassing on private lands.
Seasonal alerts: The park is open year-round, but harsh weather conditions persist in winter and may occur at any time of year. Campers please note that water must be treated and portable stoves are necessary, since firewood is not readily available. Guard against mosquitoes and biting flies in summer, and hypothermia at all times of year.
