The planned community of Anniston was founded in 1883 by industrialist Samuel Noble, designed as a "Model City of the South" that utilized the advancements of the Industrial Revolution to rebuild following the Civil War. A number of distinctive churches, houses, and statues can be seen in the historic downtown area, including Parker Memorial Church (1888), and Temple Beth-El (1891). Grace Episcopal Church (1882) is a charming Gothic structure that features attractive stonework and stained glass.
The Anniston Museum of Natural History (256-237-6766) features permanent and changing exhibits such as mummies from Egypt, dinosaurs, and minerals. It also has displays of many extinct and endangered birds of North America, as well as more than 100 African animals in natural settings. The museum is located at 800 Museum Drive in Lagarde Park.
