Car

In the central business district, Birmingham uses a grid system in which numbered avenues run east-west and numbered streets run north-south. Be cautioned, however, that numbered avenues ascend consecutively on both sides of the dividing line (the CSX railroad tracks south of First Avenue). There are Second and Third Avenues (and so on) running parallel to First Avenue on both sides, so be sure to see whether the street is (for instance) East Third Avenue N or East Third Avenue S.

In the greater metropolitan area, you'll want to carry a map. Interstates 20, 59, and 65 merge on the city's north side; I-459 creates an express bypass to the south and east. Major car rental agencies are represented at the airport and elsewhere in the city.

Public Transport

Bus:MAX (Metro Area Express) buses, operated by the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority, provide service until 10 PM daily. Basic fares are $1 plus $0.25 for a transfer.

Taxis:Rates are set by the city and are the same for all companies. Fares include a $2.75 drop charge plus $1.80 per mile. There is no charge for additional passengers except on trips to and from the airport. Companies include Yellow (205-328-4444).

Airport

Birmingham International Airport (BHM) is located 4.5 miles (or a ten-minute drive) from downtown.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Birmingham:

Your options are taxis, shuttles, and (much more expensive) limos. As Birmingham's hotels and motels are widely scattered throughout the metropolitan area, the cost of a taxi ride will vary depending on location. A taxi ride downtown costs around $12 for one passenger, but a cost of $5 is added for each additional passenger on all trips to and from the airport. The per-person cost of a van shuttle ride from Birmingham Door-to-Door (205-591-5550) to the downtown area is $16-$22 one-way or $26-$36 for a round-trip.
