One of the barrier islands at the mouth of Mobile Bay, Dauphin Island was settled by French colonists in the early 18th century. Fort Gaines Historic Site overlooks the mouth of the bay, opposite Fort Morgan on the other shore. Although the present structure dates from the Civil War (and has a small Civil War museum), some sort of fortification has stood at this strategic location since 1717. The Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab has an aquarium and other exhibits concerning the waters of the coast and bay. Much of the island is a bird sanctuary with trails open to the public. You'll also find swimming at Bienville Beach, fishing at the 850-foot fishing pier, and boating facilities at the Dauphin Island Marina.
