Although this Tennessee River town was nearly destroyed during the Civil War, it thrived in the late 19th century. Its historic districts include many Victorian structures. You can visit the Old State Bank, one of only four buildings to survive the ravages of war, where exhibits cover the history of Decatur and Alabama. Nature's wonders are on display at Cook's Natural Science Museum. Nearby, the varied terrain in the 34,000-acre Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge provides year-round homes for a wide variety of native animals and plants; the refuge harbors thousands of migrating waterfowl during the winter. Recreational opportunities at Point Mallard Park include camping, fishing, swimming, golf, miniature golf, an ice rink, and waterpark rides.
