Mobile is bordered on the east by the Mobile River and on the South by Mobile Bay. The Mississippi border is to the west. The original colonial city of Mobile was built according to the Spanish land grant system of squares. Outside downtown, the city's layout does not follow any specific system other than having some main feeder streets running east-west and north-south.

Interstate 65 crosses the city north-south and Interstate 10 crosses the city east-west. Airport Boulevard is a major east-west commercial thoroughfare that is convenient to the airport. Keep in mind that this and other major streets become congested at rush hours, approximately 7 AM to 8:30 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM.

Reasonably priced parking garages and metered street parking are available downtown. Rental cars are available at the airport.

Public Transport

Bus: Wave Transit System buses run Monday through Saturday from 5:30 AM to 10 PM, except on major holidays. The basic fare is $1 and transfers are $0.10. For route information and schedules, contact the Wave Transit System (251-344-6600).

Taxi: Mobile Cab (Yellow) is one choice. The first mile costs $2.20, each additional mile is $1.20, and there is 24-hour service. (251-476-7711)

Airport

Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) is the major airport servicing Mobile. Visitors also fly into Pensacola, FL, or New Orleans, LA, and then take ground transportation to Mobile.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Mobile:Check whether your hotel provides free airport transportation.

Shuttle: Mobile Bay Transportation offers door-to-door van service to downtown hotels. Reservations are required. The fare is about $25 for one person, $15 each for two or more. (251-633-5693; 800-272-6234)

Taxi: Yellow Cab (251-476-7711) provides taxi service from the airport to downtown. The fare should be $28-$30 for one to five passengers. Ask your cab driver about the fare before you leave.
