Montgomery is situated on the Alabama River, approximately 165 miles southwest of Atlanta and 90 miles south of Birmingham. The streets of downtown Montgomery follow a grid system of alternating one-way north-south streets and two-way east-west streets. The main arteries into the city are Interstate 65 north-south and Interstate 85 east-west. To enter the downtown business and government center from I-65, exit at Clay St. or Herron St. You can also exit to downtown at Court St. east or north and Union Street, off of I-85. Dexter Avenue is a main thoroughfare that will take you through the heart of the city to the State Capitol. Traffic is heavy and congested downtown Monday through Friday due to the approximately 10,000 government employees who work there. The Montgomery Visitor Center in historic Union Station at 300 Water St., open seven days a week, is a good place to get acquainted with the city (334-262-0013). Metered street parking and reasonable rates for parking in garages and lots are available. The Boulevard Loop circles the entire city and is called East Boulevard, West Boulevard, South Boulevard and North Boulevard according to where you are on the loop.

Public Transport

Bus: Montgomery's mass transit system is called MATS, Montgomery Area Transit System. Fares cost $1, exact fare required; transfers are free. Customer service is offered at 334-262-7356.

Taxi: Yellow Cab (334-262-5225) and Queen Cab (334-263-7137) are Montgomery's major cab companies but other companies also provide taxi service. The first mile costs $3.45 ($1.95 + $1.50), each additional mile is $1.50.

Airport

Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM), also known as Dannelly Field (334-281-5040), is the major airport servicing Montgomery. Dannelly has routes to major cities daily, with connecting international flights. Visitors to Montgomery sometimes fly into Birmingham and then go to Montgomery by ground transportation.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Montgomery:Always check whether your hotel provides free airport transportation.

Taxi: Taxi fare from to downtown should be $20 for one person or $10 per person for two or more in one taxi. Ask your cab driver about the fare before you leave. Service is provided by Yellow Cab (334-262-5225), Queen Cab (334-263-7137), and others. Rental car and airport limousine services are also available.
