Once a busy shipping center, this small town between the Piedmont Plateau and the Coastal Plain made a bid to become the state capital in 1846 but lost out to nearby Montgomery. Here, you'll find the elegant paths of Jasmine Hill Gardens, where hundreds of flowers and plants are displayed amid a setting enhanced by reproductions of Greek and Roman art.Nearby, Fort Toulouse-Jackson Park, an active archaeological site, features the remains of one 19th-century American and two earlier French forts. The park includes nature paths, an arboretum, camping, and a boat launch. You'll find displays of over 600 mounted animals at the Al Holmes Wildlife Museum. Excellent fishing and boating are popular at both the Jordan Dam on the Coosa River and a bit farther away at Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa.
