Once the capital of the state (1826-1846), elegant Tuscaloosa is a town of stately oaks and the home of the University of Alabama, founded in 1831. Highlights of the campus include the Gorgas House (1829), once the home of William C. Gorgas, the conqueror of yellow fever, and the Paul W. Bryant Museum, a memorial to Alabama's football heritage and "Bear" Bryant, college football's all-time winningest coach. You can also visit the Battle-Friedman House, a Greek-Revival mansion built in 1835. The Alabama Museum of Natural History, also located on the university campus, has a branch museum south of the city at Moundville. Where the 317-acre Moundville Archaeological Park preserves the site of a flourishing city from the pre-historic Mississippian period.
