Cotton was once king here, but lumber took the thrown as this Ouachita River town's main industry after the Civil War. A handsome city with restored homes, Camden boasts the McCollum-Chidester House, a former stagecoach stop that served as headquarters for Confederate forces and for the Union's General Frederick Steele. The home retains both its original furnishings and its bullet holes. You can take a driving tour past a dozen other antebellum homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Camping, boating, swimming, and fishing are offered at White Oak Lake State Park. The Civil War battle site at Poison Spring State Park is nearby.
