Spanning the banks of the Arkansas River on the border with Oklahoma, this modern business center is famous for its rough and tumble frontier past. Home of the famous "hanging judge," Isaac C. Parker, Fort Smith provides an exciting look into the history of westward expansion. "Miss Laura's," the only former bordello on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the city's visitor center. Ride a vintage streetcar from the Fort Smith Trolley Car Museum to the Old Fort Museum, where a restored soda fountain awaits and exhibits chronicle the city's history from Indian days to the present. Stroll through the 22-block Belle Grove Historic District to see a variety of regional architecture dating back as far as 130 years. And don't miss the place where it all started -- Fort Smith National Historic Site, with Judge Parker's courthouse, the restored gallows, and the old jail, once so crowded it was known as "Hell on the Border."
