For many people the presidency of Bill Clinton put Little Rock back on the map. Along with the opening of the Clinton library, the city has seen a spate of new construction since the conclusion of the Clinton presidency. The William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park, the official repository for the records of the Clinton presidency, opened in downtown Little Rock in 2004. Celebrated for its exceptional architecture, the museum offers numerous interactive exhibits about the Clinton years. For more on the political life of the city and state, take in the exhibits at the Old State House Museum. The beautiful Greek Revival building was the state capitol from 1836 to 1911. The modern Arkansas State Capitol, modeled after the U.S. Capitol, was constructed of Arkansas stone, with stained-glass domes, Tiffany doors, and other superb decorative features. Tours are available.
Located in the state's oldest neighborhood, the Historic Arkansas Museum opened its new facility in 2001. In addition to extensive displays of decorative, mechanical and fine art created by Arkansans during the last 200 years, the museum encompasses five preserved homes with original furnishings. You can also explore history of more recent vintage at the Central High School National Historic Site, the site of a desegregation showdown in 1957.
The Arkansas Arts Center in MacArthur Park has a collection of drawings, paintings, sculptures, and modern craft media by nationally and internationally known artists ranging from Rembrandt to Chihuly. The art center also houses the state's only professional children's theatre company. The historic Arsenal Building in MacArthur Park houses the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, which opened in 2001.
Exhibits at the Aerospace Education Center include ultralight aircraft, a replica of an Apollo command module, and other historic aircraft. Youngsters will enjoy a visit to the Arkansas Museum of Discovery in downtown's Riverfront Park which offers a wide variety of hands-on displays on history, science and technology. Nearby, the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum (opened in 2005) offers tours of the World War II submarine, USS Razorback. West of downtown, Little Rock Zoo features more than 200 species from around the world including primates, big cats, and anteaters.
Sports fans can cross the river to North Little Rock to watch the Arkansas Travelers (double-AA Texas League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels) who, as of the beginning of the 2007 season, play at brand-new Dickey-Stephens Park, and the Arkansas Twisters of Arena Football 2, who play at Alltel Arena. To cool down in warm weather, take to the waterslides and other rides at Wild River Country, also found in North Little Rock.
