On December 7, 1862, Federal troops and Confederate forces clashed here in the last major Civil War battle in this corner of Arkansas. Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park memorializes the site of the encounter overlooking the Illinois River. Hindman Hall Museum houses a visitors center and offers an audiovisual display. You can take a walking tour of the grounds where several historic structures including cabins and a schoolhouse still stand. Reenactments of the battle are conducted in even numbered years. In September, Prairie Grove offers a Clothesline Fair in conjunction with the Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale. Bob Kidd Lake to the west is a popular spot for fishing and boating.
