This historic mining town (reputedly named for a globe-shaped silver nugget found here in the 1870s) enjoyed a short career as a center of silver mining and a longer one as a copper-mining capital. Many buildings from the town's glory days still line the streets. The Gila County Historical Museum in an old mine rescue building contains a small collection of Indian, pioneer and mining arifacts, while the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts in the old courthouse building displays the works of local artists and artisans.

The city also encompasses Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park where a Salado Indian pueblo is in various stages of restoration. Some of the living areas at the 300-room site have been furnished as they would have been by inhabitants 600 years ago.

Globe is at the center of a small universe of scenic wonders. Northeast on Route 60, you'll find the Salt River Canyon, over a half-mile deep and five miles wide. Heading west on Route 60 from Globe, you'll encounter Devil's Canyon, while the Route 88 northwest will take you over the spectacular Apache Trail to Roosevelt Lake Recreation Area and into the legendary Superstition Mountains, home of the mythical Lost Dutchman Mine.
