Mesa was founded by Mormons who took advantage of irrigation ditches built by Hohokam Indians hundreds of years earlier to turn the desert into a fertile valley. The Mormons' Arizona Temple is the city's most prominent building although its interior is closed to the general public. You can see some of the preserved ancient irrigation system in the Park of the Canals. For a history of the region, with interactive exhibits on archaeology, paleontology, and gold mining, head to the Mesa Southwest Museum. Nearby, you can visit Sirrine House, a Victorian mansion dating from 1896.
The Mesa Arts Center is the place to go for a mix of live performances, contemporary art displays, and working artists' studios. A wide range of fighter aircraft are on display at the Arizona Wing Commemorative Air Force Museum. The Arizona Museum for Youth offers art programs and exhibits especially designed for youngsters. You'll find water rides, water slides, and three miniature golf courses at Golfland/Sunsplash.
In nearby Chandler, you can visit the Chandler Museum which has Indian, pioneeer, and farming artifacts. The Arizona Railway Museum, also in Chandler, has a 1906 steam locomotive and other preserved rolling stock.
