Phoenix and the surrounding Valley of the Sun have lots to offer when that baking sun goes down. The dark, smoke-and-whiskey-charged atmosphere of the Rhythm Room provides the best backdrop in Phoenix for blues and roots music. This is the place to see famous and near-famous bluesmen and blueswomen.
As cosmopolitan as it has become, Phoenix still qualifies as part of the Wild West. You can relive those rough-and-tumble days at the Handlebar-J in Scottsdale, a honky-tonk crammed full of cowboy memorabilia. They have a huge dance floor, dance lessons, and down-home cooking. For a less raucous evening, head to North Phoenix and the Fiddler's Dream Coffeehouse where they feature live acoustic music from Thursday through Saturday. They sponsor regular concerts, open mikes, and music festivals, as well.
Comedy fans can have their funny bones tweaked at The Comedy Spot in Scottsdale or at Tempe's Improv Comedy Club, where you'll find national touring comedians every week. If you're after a swank, martini-drenched evening, you can't do better than Phoenix's hip Chez Nous, a vintage lounge from the heyday of cocktails. An R&B combo completes the ambiance. Anglophiles may not recognize George and Dragon's high ceilings and tasteful lighting as being anywhere close to the decor of London's legendary pubs, but they're sure to recognize the 20 English beers on tap and the tasty bangers and mash. Darts and billiards are staple entertainments, naturally. If you thirst for a margarita, head to the glass-enclosed patio of Old Town Tortilla Factory and order up the best in town. Their selection of tequilas is unsurpassed.
