Encircled by forested mountains, this one-time capital of the Arizona Territory is now a resort town, infused with historic charm and cooled by its near mile-high elevation. Shop and sightsee along Whiskey Row, which once attracted rowdy gold-rushers, stroll by Victorian homes, and step into the town's early days at the Sharlot Hall Museum -- a collection of nine buildings, including a print shop and schoolhouse. The Smoki Museum displays artifacts of ancient Native American Indians. Prescott National Forest surrounds the town, offering hiking, fishing, rockhounding, and camping. Two casinos are located nearby.
