This trendy, upscale resort, retirement, and artists' community offers a plethora of galleries, shops, and restaurants in central Arizona's spectacular red rock country. Just south of the city, Tlaquepaque, built in the style of a Mexican village, is especially noted for its eclectic boutiques. To the north, you can drive Route 89A through the area's natural centerpiece, Oak Creek Canyon. This scar in the earth's surface is noted for its narrow walls, dramatic rock formations, and the changing colors of its cliffs. Oak Creek spills through Slide Rock State Park, where swimmers enjoy the 30-foot-long natural water slide. At Red Rock State Park, you can explore the riparian habitat of Oak Creek along six hiking trails and visit the environmental center.
