Car

Much of Tucson's growth has occurred since the advent of the automobile. Because the city is so spread out, using a car is probably the best way to get around. The street-numbering system begins at the intersection of Broadway and Stone Avenue, with Stone as the north-south axis between streets designated east and west and Broadway dividing streets designated north and south. Note that numbered streets (for example, 18th Street), which run east-west, do not indicate the number of blocks you are from Broadway.

Interstates 10 and 19 intersect in Tucson and provide quick access to nearby points of interest. You'll find major car rental agencies represented at the airport and elsewhere in the city.

Public Transport

Tucson's transit authority, SunTran, operates fairly extensive bus service, and a nonprofit organization runs an antique trolley system offering limited service.

Bus: SunTran buses run from 5 am to 10 pm at an adult fare of $1; transfers are free. Waits on the major routes are usually no more than ten minutes, and second-tier routes have a 15-minute wait between pick-ups. Free downtown rides on the new Tucson Inner City Express Transit (T.I.C.E.T.) For more information on routes and schedules, call 520-792-9222.

Old Pueblo Trolley: This line of restored vintage streetcars runs between the University of Arizona and the downtown area. Operated by a volunteer staff, the trolleys take you through historic neighborhoods and provide service on Friday from 6 pm to 10 pm, Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 6 pm. Fares are $1.25 each way. And $0.25 on sundays. For information, call 520-792-1802.

Taxi: Fares are determined by the city, and include a $2.25 drop charge plus $1.80 per mile, with no extra charge for additional passengers or luggage. Cab stands are located throughout the city (a few in front of hotels), but generally hailing a cab in the street or finding cabs lined up at a stand is difficult. Most patrons call first. Two major cab companies are Yellow (520-624-6611) and Fiesta Taxi (520-622-7777).

Airport

Tucson International Airport (TUS) is located about ten miles south of the downtown area.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Tucson:Be sure to check whether your hotel provides free airport transportation.

Bus:SunTran bus route 11 to Alvernon Way departs on the half hour.

Shuttle: Arizona Stagecoach (520-889-1000) charges flat rates depending on location, with an average $20 to downtown.

Taxi: A taxi ride downtown may cost $20; to the hotels and resorts on the east side, fares start around $25; to hotels and resorts on the north side, the cost may be around $35.
