The compelling site of Window Rock, a natural opening some 47 feet across in the sandstone cliffs, led government agents in the 1930s to create this village as the capital of the Navaho Nation and local headquarters for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Navaho Museum, Library & Visitors Center has exhibits on the history of the land, the Navaho people, and the development of the Navaho's craft of weaving. The Navaho Arts and Crafts Enterprise offers superb examples of rugs and jewelry for sale. You can also visit the Navaho Nation Zoo and Botanical Park which displays local wildlife including eagles, bobcats, mountain lions and coyotes, as well as examples of Navaho buildings.
Nearby, you'll find the St. Michael's Mission Museum, detailing the efforts of the Franciscans in the land of the Navaho. Further to the west, Hubbell Trading Post, now a national historic site, is still operated much as it was 130 years ago when it was run by the highly-respected trader, John Lorenzo Hubbell.
